Sorry about the pun. Don’t kill anything. Just posting a faster way to make Pussyhats for those out there trying to get a few done by Saturday.
The key to the hat is to rib all the way to the crown and then instead of decreasing you switch to stockinette and don’t decrease at all binding off all stitches at once. This can be done in the round for a faster project.
The original pattern calls for 100 stitches when joined (50 on each end) and a 5 mm needle. In the round make this 96. Rib for the same 4 1/2 inches then switch to knitting every row in the round for another 4 inches. Bind off all stitches at same time. The switch from rib to stockinette at the crown without decreases creates the ears.
Other hints for faster hats: ( I actually think my original stitch counts were too high but a 2 by 2 rib is quite forgiving and its nice to have extra at the top. Anyways:
5.5 mm needle and 80 stitches or (5.0 mm 88 stitches for Aran weight yarn)
6.0 mm needle 72 or 68 stitches (chunky yarn or double a worsted yarn)
6.5 mm needle 64 stitches tighter knitters or a slightly heavy chunky
I have lots of choices in store. It should take 3 to 4 hours to make one of these hats in the round. Watching old episodes of The Apprentice while knitting may also increase speed but watch your tension.
If you want a super fast super bulky hat go with Drops Andes and 8mm or 9mm needles and 48 stitches.
